Have you ever admired how skillful and industrious birds are? Especially the weaver bird? Working with its beak and picking spots away from prying eyes, it intertwines fibres and any sturdy material it considers suitable for a warm safe abode.
This sculpture is my tribute to the weaver bird, one of nature’s best architects, builder and site manager. It was my desire to mirror the shape, width and workings of the weaver’s nest and it took quite many hours from start to finish. There is an image in set that will give you a peak into the process.
This nest is created in an additive-sculpture technique and uses 100% sustainable and earth friendly material such as raffia (plant fibre) and tree-free paper and is handpainted with coffee, some water colour and pan pastels. Once it was ready, I mounted it on a wooden block and added a slim branch to depict its suspension from a tree – just as it really would, in nature.
