Inspiration: This work is the first of a series of several woodblock. Inspired by nature, architecture, as well as arts in general, I am fascinated by the weird and poetic. This series explores how colors can create different atmospheres, oscillating on the weird – poetic spectrum.
Story/ Process: As a feminist I feel the need to reflect and retreat in places that can take many forms, a bedroom, a cabin, a nest, the nature… The title is, apparently, in contrast with the scene depicted, three people bathing, and means “violent struggle”. I was inspired by the veins of the of the wood, which made me think of water, the rest flowed of these lines. The water lines follow exactly the natural veins of the birch woodblock that was used.
Themes: feminism, intersectionality, intimate, domesticity, weird, strange, poetic
About the artist: The artist is a French master student studying architecture at Aalto. Interested in everything related to handicrafts and arts, the artist practices woodcut, photography, drawing, ceramic, mending, sewing, paper making, and more generally is interested in anything that can be made by hand.
